Living on the mountain gives us the opportunity to see a lot more of nature than you can in the city. This goes for both flora and fauna. So far I have seen numerous deer at the house and/or on the roads in the community as well as several foxes and a number of squirrels, both the typical brown and also ones with a velvety jet black coat. There have also been a number of hummingbirds at the house, even though I keep the feeders empty so as not to attract bears.
Unfortunately, I seldom have my camera handy when the critters come by, but from time to time I'm sure I'll get lucky.
13 JUL 09: This is the day that I had my first social gathering at the house. Kay, Tom Eggers, and Leemon Baird came over for a BBQ and techie day where we worked on Leemon's Cupcake, which is a small 3-D printer. While we were eating a few deer came by and I got my first picture, if you can call it that. Before I could try to get a better picture they wandered off.
06 AUG 09: There had been a number of very pretty flowers around the house and I never thought to take any pictures. By the time I did, all of the beautiful columbines that had been on the north side of the house had lost their blooms. But there were still a number of wildflowers around. While I was walking around I also came across a mushroom with a bright red cap. I have no idea what kind it is or whether or not it is toxic.
08 AUG 09: I had been hearing young chicks in the area of the lower deck but every time I went out there they would go silent and I couldn't fint them. Today I finally did. Their momma had built a nest in a hanging planter. I think there were three or four of them, but I couldn't be sure and I didn't want to disturb them very much.
09 AUG 09: Today I was watching the bird's momma go around gathering food and saw a little chipmunk running around. He decided to stop on a log and pose so I obliged and took his picture.
12 AUG 09: There are quite a few daisies growing around the house. These are some along the path coming from the basement level up to the driveway.
14 AUG 09: I took some pictures with the full zoom (optical + digital) capability of the camera and I was pretty impressed with the results. The daisies were probably fifteen feet away and the chipmunk was about thirty. There was also a really nice rainbow as I was headed up to the house, so I stopped at the top of the front face road and snapped a couple pictures. I also took one looking down at the gate and mail house area.
